Online dating for beginners

A lot of people don’t realize that online dating is a growing trend. If you’d ask me two years ago if I tried using it, I’d probably laugh. Is it that hard to meet people in real life? And not to mention that there are a few risks involved with online dating. However I got to a point where my curiosity got the better of me and I began to wonder what the online world had to offer. Here are some tips that I think could help online dating beginners.

The number one rule is never put personal information on your profile. Put up a profile picture of yourself and crop your friends out. Never disclose where you live, your full name or where you work. Remember that when creating a profile; be specific in what you are looking for. It will help you clear out people who you are not interested in. Pictures say everything, so be realistic. Use pictures that describe you well. Whether you travel, read books, if you’re the sporty type or if you like a night out. Avoid bathroom or half naked pictures.

When having a conversation with someone on the site you should trust your gut feeling. If warning signs pop into your head, you should take notice of them. You need to make sure that you really get to know the person before arranging to meet up.

When meeting someone for the very first time, make sure you meet in a public area. Avoid dinner as it could be awkward if you don’t get on. Having coffee is a great place to start. You should also set a time limit just in case you need an escape plan.

More importantly just because online dating is more accessible doesn’t make dating any easier. Like meeting a person in a real world, it is full of questions and uncertainty and sometimes that can be overwhelming. Dating is hard wherever you meet the guy and sometimes you have to take the leap of faith to make it work.
